First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Grand Coloane Resort, honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from this corner of Macau — but this five-star property completely changed my perspective on Coloane Island. The resort sits right on Hac Sa Beach, and you know what struck me immediately? The sheer space of it all. While most of Macau feels packed tight, this place actually breathes. There’s parking right on-site (which is honestly a miracle in Macau), and the lobby opens up to these sweeping views of the South China Sea that make you forget you’re still technically in one of the world’s most densely populated places.

The Location Magic

I mean, couples absolutely love this spot — and I get why they rate it so highly for romantic getaways. You’re about 20 minutes from the casino madness of Cotai, but it feels like you’ve escaped to a different world entirely. The black sand beach (Hac Sa literally means “black sand”) stretches right outside your window, and there’s this Portuguese colonial village vibe that reminds you Macau isn’t just about gambling. The golf course is practically next door if that’s your thing, and honestly, watching the sunrise over the water from here beats any view from the Venetian.

The Room Experience

The beds here — well, they’ve got a reputation for a reason. I’m usually pretty picky about mattresses, but I actually slept better here than I have in months. Each room has this understated luxury thing going on, not flashy like the casino hotels, but genuinely comfortable. The balconies face either the ocean or the resort’s gardens, and there’s something really satisfying about having actual space to spread out. The bathrooms are generous too, with those deep soaking tubs that you’ll actually want to use after a day exploring the island.

Activities and Amenities

What surprised me most was how much there is to do without leaving the property. The tennis court gets decent use (though it can be pretty humid in summer, fair warning), and the fitness center is better equipped than I expected. The spa treatments incorporate both Portuguese and Chinese influences, which feels perfectly Macau to me. But honestly? Sometimes the best activity is just walking along Hac Sa Beach early in the morning when it’s just you, a few joggers, and the occasional fishing boat heading out for the day.

There’s something about this place that keeps people coming back — I noticed quite a few repeat guests during my stay, which says something. The restaurant serves this interesting fusion of Macanese and international cuisine that you won’t find in the casino buffets, and the service feels more personal than what you get in the bigger properties. I think it’s the combination of genuine luxury without the overwhelming crowds, plus that beachfront location that makes couples rate it so highly. You get the best of both worlds — easy access to Macau’s attractions when you want them, and a peaceful retreat when you need to recharge.

  The activities for kids were fantastic! My 6 year old made loads of new friends playing in the kids room and then outside on the lawn in the bouncy castle and at the various activity tables.
  The breakfast was excellent value for money and the service at the restaurant was very friendly.

  The beds were so comfortable with pillows that were perfect. The food, drink and ambiance in the restaurant were fantastic. Every single member of staff went out of their way to make our stay comfortable and happy!

  Check in was smooth. Staff were friendly and helpful. We booked a connected room, both rooms were clean and spacious with large courtyard. The view from the room courtyard was beautiful overlooking the pools area if pools were not under renovation. The shuttle bus service provided by the hotel really faciliated our travel between the hotel and the main part of Macau. There was a beach close by and there were quite a lot of areas to explore within the hotel. Overall, a pleasant stay.
