You know what surprised me about the Vienna Hotel in Tanzhou? It’s actually way better than you’d expect for this part of Zhongshan. I mean, Tanzhou isn’t exactly the flashy downtown area – it’s more of a working industrial district – but this place sits on Shenli Road like this quiet gem that nobody really talks about.

The first thing that hits you when you walk in is how they’ve nailed that balance between business hotel efficiency and actually feeling welcoming. The lobby smells faintly of jasmine (not overpowering, thankfully), and the check-in was honestly smoother than some five-star places I’ve stayed at. What really got my attention though was the attention to small details – like how the elevators actually come quickly, and the hallways don’t echo with every footstep like most budget chains. The rooms are surprisingly spacious for a four-star, with these big windows that let in tons of natural light. I stayed on the seventh floor and could see clear across to the industrial parks, which sounds boring but there’s something oddly peaceful about watching the city wake up from up there.

Here’s the thing about staying in Tanzhou – you’re about twenty minutes from the more touristy parts of Zhongshan, but honestly, I kind of liked being in this more authentic slice of the city. There’s a fantastic local breakfast spot just two blocks down from the hotel (turn right out the front door, you can’t miss it), and the wet market nearby is where actual locals shop, not tourists. The hotel’s own breakfast spread is solid too – proper congee, fresh fruit, and they do this egg dish that I’m still trying to figure out how to recreate at home. Parking was never an issue, which if you’ve driven around Guangdong province, you’ll appreciate. The WiFi actually works throughout the building (shocking, I know), and the beds are firm in that good way that doesn’t leave you aching in the morning. My only real complaint? The air conditioning unit makes this slight clicking sound every few minutes, but honestly, after the first night I barely noticed it. For the price point and that 9.0 rating – which I totally get now – this place delivers way more than it promises.

  Everything was perfect and beautiful. The rooms were spotless and the corridors had beautiful patterned paintings. The elevators are like works of art, the entrance lobby, slippers, toothpaste and toothbrush. Yes, I am satisfied with the centre, and I recommend it. The hotels in China are generally all very nice.
