Macau Hotel S – Formerly – Macau Hotel Sun Sun Overview
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard about Macau Hotel S (which used to be called Hotel Sun Sun, and honestly the old name had more character), I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes these smaller hotels surprise you, and this one actually gets it right in ways that matter.
The location on Praca Ponte E Horta is one of those spots that looks unremarkable on a map but works perfectly in real life. You’re basically in the heart of old Macau – I mean, you can walk to Senado Square in about eight minutes, and the Lisboa Casino is close enough that you’ll hear the occasional late-night excitement but far enough that it won’t keep you up. What I really liked is how you’re tucked into this little square that feels authentically local. There’s a dim sum place around the corner that opens at 6 AM (the locals line up for it), and you’ve got those narrow streets with the Portuguese tiles underfoot that make Macau feel different from the rest of China. The hotel sits in this old building that’s been renovated but still has character – thick walls that actually keep the noise down, which is rare in this part of town.
Here’s what impressed me: the staff genuinely seems to care about getting things right. Check-in was smooth, they speak decent English and Cantonese (helpful since taxi drivers here prefer Cantonese), and when I mentioned I had an early flight, they arranged a taxi without making it feel like a huge favor. The rooms are clean and well-maintained – not fancy, but everything works. The AC is quiet and actually cools the room, the shower has proper water pressure, and the beds are firmer than what you’d find in most Western hotels, which I actually prefer. The 8.7 rating makes sense when you realize this place focuses on doing the basics really well rather than trying to be something it’s not. Sure, you won’t get a pool or a fancy gym, but you’ll get a solid night’s sleep in a spot where you can actually explore Macau on foot. I stayed here during the autumn festival season when everything gets crowded, and while the main tourist areas were packed, this little corner stayed relatively peaceful. If you’re the type who wants to experience Macau beyond just the casinos and wants a place that feels connected to the actual city rather than some international hotel bubble, this works. Just don’t expect luxury – expect authenticity and competence, which honestly can be harder to find.
