Walking into Hotel Metropole on Avenida da Praia Grande, you immediately get that classic Macau vibe — it’s not trying to be the flashiest place in town, but there’s something genuinely welcoming about it. The lobby has this comfortable, lived-in feel that honestly makes you relax right away. You know what I mean? Sometimes you walk into a hotel and feel like you need to be on your best behavior, but this three-star spot just lets you be yourself. The beds are actually quite decent (I’m picky about mattresses), and the air conditioning is a blessing during those humid Macau summers. You’ll find the space is well-designed for the size, with enough storage for a week’s worth of clothes and a decent workspace if you need to catch up on emails. The bathroom is compact but functional, with good water pressure — something you definitely don’t want to take for granted when you’re exploring the city all day.

Exploring the Neighborhood

What I love about staying here is how you’re positioned right between old and new Macau. Walk one direction and you’re in the UNESCO World Heritage zone with all those Portuguese colonial buildings and cobblestone streets. Head the other way and you’re at the ferry terminal, which makes day trips to Hong Kong ridiculously easy. There’s this great little restaurant called Riquexó just around the corner that serves some of the best Macanese cuisine I’ve had — definitely ask the front desk about it. The whole area feels safe to wander around, even late at night, which isn’t something you can say about every part of the city.
