You know what caught me off guard about the Holiday Inn Express in Gongbei? It’s actually one of those rare chain hotels that feels like it gets its location. I mean, most Holiday Inns could be anywhere, but this one on Qiaoguang Road – it’s clearly designed for people who know exactly why they’re in this corner of Zhuhai.

The lobby hits you with that crisp, efficient vibe that IHG does well, but there’s something distinctly local about the energy here. Maybe it’s because half the guests are clearly cross-border commuters heading to Macau (the Gongbei Port is literally a five-minute walk), and the other half are families who’ve figured out this is way better value than staying across the border. The front desk staff switches between Mandarin, Cantonese, and English without missing a beat – honestly, their English is better than at some much pricier places I’ve stayed. Check-in was smooth, though I’d recommend arriving before 3 PM if you’re traveling during Chinese holidays because it gets busy fast.

The rooms are what you’d expect from a newer Holiday Inn Express, but with some thoughtful touches. The beds are firm (which I love, but heads up if you prefer soft), and the blackout curtains actually work – crucial since Qiaoguang Road can get pretty bright with all the neon from the shopping complexes. What really impressed me was the shower pressure and the fact that the WiFi doesn’t slow to a crawl when the hotel fills up. Small thing, but the windows open slightly, which is rare for chain hotels and nice when you want actual fresh air instead of just AC. The soundproofing is decent, though you’ll catch some street noise if you’re a light sleeper – this is a busy commercial area after all.

Here’s the thing about staying here: you’re not just picking a hotel, you’re positioning yourself perfectly for this whole region. Underground City mall is connected practically next door (great for late-night snacks or forgotten essentials), and if you’re planning day trips to Macau, you’ll thank yourself for choosing this spot. The Portuguese egg tarts from the bakery two blocks down are legitimately as good as what you’ll find in Macau, and about half the price. I actually ended up eating there three mornings in a row instead of the hotel breakfast – though the breakfast is perfectly fine if you’re in a rush.

The hotel feels busy but not chaotic, if that makes sense. There’s always movement in the lobby, people coming and going with purpose, but it’s not tourist-trap frantic. The elevators are quick, the hallways are quiet, and the whole place has that efficient, clean feeling that makes you comfortable without being memorable. Sometimes that’s exactly what you want. At 8.9 rating, it’s clearly doing something right, and honestly, for the price point in this location, I get why people keep coming back. It’s the kind of place that solves your logistics so you can focus on why you’re actually in Zhuhai.

  The room is spacious and well-equipped, with an exceptional city view of Zhuhai. Walking distance (20 mins) to the Gongbei port & railway station, with plenty of lovely local restaurants & grocery stores. We love the self-service laundry rooms here as well. And the hotel staff even offered to carry our heavy suitcases onto the taxi.
