Holiday Inn Express Macau City Centre by IHG Overview
You know what actually surprised me about the Holiday Inn Express in Macau’s city center? It’s tucked away on Avenida Do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues – which sounds impossibly fancy but is honestly just this bustling street that locals use to cut between the touristy waterfront and the residential neighborhoods. I mean, when you first walk up, it doesn’t scream “luxury,” but that’s kind of the point. This is a solid 3-star that knows exactly what it is.
The thing is, Macau can be tricky for hotels – you’re either stuck in some massive casino resort where you never see daylight, or you’re in some tiny guesthouse where the walls are paper-thin. This Holiday Inn Express hits that sweet spot where you actually feel like you’re staying in the real city. From my room (seventh floor, if that matters), I could hear the morning sounds of people heading to work, motorbikes puttering past, the occasional construction noise – but honestly, it wasn’t disruptive. Just… authentic, you know? Plus the windows actually open, which is rarer than you’d think in modern hotels.
What really sold me was how the staff handled things. Check-in was quick – no drama, no upselling – and the front desk guy actually drew me a little map showing the back route to Senado Square that avoids the main tourist crush. That’s local knowledge right there. The breakfast situation is pretty standard Holiday Inn Express fare, but they’ve added some Cantonese options that make sense for the location. Nothing fancy, but the congee was decent and the coffee was strong enough to get you moving. The elevators are a bit slow during morning rush (around 8-9 AM), but I started just taking the stairs – good for the legs anyway.
Here’s the practical stuff that matters: the AC works great (crucial in Macau’s humidity), the WiFi is solid throughout the building, and there’s actually decent water pressure in the showers. The beds are firm – like, properly firm – which I loved but might not be everyone’s thing. Storage space is adequate but not generous, so pack light if you’re the type who spreads everything out. The fitness center is small but functional, though it gets crowded around 6 PM when the business travelers hit it.
Location-wise, you’re about a 10-minute walk to the historic center, maybe 15 to the waterfront, and there’s this little dim sum place two blocks down (Rua de Pequim direction) that’s absolutely worth finding. The neighborhood feels safe even late at night – I walked back from dinner around 11 PM several times without any concerns. Honestly, for the rating it’s getting (8.7 seems about right), you’re looking at a hotel that delivers exactly what it promises without any unpleasant surprises. It’s not going to wow you, but it’s not going to disappoint you either – and sometimes that’s exactly what you need when you’re trying to actually explore a city instead of hiding in your hotel room.

I really enjoyed my stay. There are plenty of good cafes in the area and many things are within walking distance, for a reasonably active person. The baggage storage was secure. The breakfast was very good and the staff were extremely cheerful considering they were rushed off their feet.
