Grand Emperor Hotel Overview

You know what struck me first about the Grand Emperor Hotel? It’s actually positioned in this sweet spot on Avenida Comercial de Macau where you get the energy of the city without feeling like you’re trapped in a casino maze. I mean, don’t get me wrong – the casinos are right there if that’s your thing – but you can also just step outside and grab some proper Macanese coffee or those incredible pork chop buns from the local spots that most tourists never find.

The hotel itself has this interesting vibe where it’s clearly aiming for luxury (hence the “Grand Emperor” name, which honestly made me roll my eyes a bit at first), but it pulls it off without being stuffy. The lobby has these marble floors that actually don’t echo like crazy, and the staff genuinely seems to know what they’re doing – not just going through the motions. Check-in was smooth, even during what I later learned was a pretty busy weekend. The rooms are solid four-star quality, nothing groundbreaking but definitely comfortable, with those blackout curtains that actually work (you’ll thank me for mentioning this if you’re dealing with jet lag). The AC is strong enough to handle Macau’s humidity, which can be brutal in summer.

What really won me over, though, was how the hotel sits in the neighborhood. You’re walking distance from the Ruins of St. Paul’s – and I mean actually walking distance, not that “20-minute hike” that some places call walking distance – but you’re also near these little side streets where locals eat. There’s this dim sum place about three blocks down that doesn’t even have an English sign, but the hotel concierge (ask for Helen if she’s still there) will draw you a little map. The whole area gets this amazing smell of incense from the nearby temples mixing with street food, especially in the evenings. It’s sort of touristy but not aggressively so, if that makes sense. You’ll hear some street noise – it’s a city, after all – but nothing that kept me awake. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle if you’re driving, but honestly, you don’t need a car here anyway. The whole historic center is totally walkable, and taxis are everywhere when your feet give out from all the cobblestones.

Reviews of Grand Emperor Hotel

  • Jly from Malaysia – 19 December 2024 (8/10)

Great location near the central Macau. Rooms were sold at 4-star price with five-star comfort and amenities. If you don’t mind tacky interior design and being in a casino, it’s a good deal.

What could be improved: Smoky smell in the non-smoking room

  • Danny from Belgium – 1 June 2023 (9/10)

The room itself was excellent, of high standard e.g. with electric curtains. Location is close to Lisboa Hotel and other high profile hotels/casinos. Staff is also helpfull and friendly.

What could be improved: Hotel did not have bus service to ferry boats, unlike other big hotels. No western food available, but makes sense as there are hardly any westerners in Macau…

Really good price for the room

What could be improved: The room was clearly in need of a makeover. But the real issue for me was that the whole floor smelt like cigaret.
